The Sealed Nectar

The Sealed Nectar by Shaykh Safi ur-Rahman

The Prophets and Messengers
(peace be upon them) which were sent to mankind, regardless of the diversity of their respective periods and geographical locations, all called towards the same general principles and the same basic mission:
“For We assuredly sent amongst every People a messenger, (with the command), "Serve Allah, and eschew Evil": of the People were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).” [16: 36]
Apart from belief in Allah, his qualities and attributes, the Prophets and Messengers taught their people about:
• His Books
• His Messengers
• The Last Day
• The Divine Decree
The mission of the Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon him) was one. Allah enjoined upon them all for them to teach their followers, the fulfilment of promises, dutifulness to parents, justice between people and truthfulness. Likewise, detestable actions and attributes such as untruthfulness, lecherousness and the eating of people’s wealth unjustly were prohibited.
By far, the most important of these principles towards which the Prophets called to is ofcourse belief in Allah (and consequently what this belief entails). The Prophet (peace be upon him) preached, as did the Prophet’s before him, that Allah is to be worshipped alone, with no partners or rivals in his divinity. Indeed, Allah is far from having a wife, son, associate or equal in any form. Similarly, it does befit his supreme wisdom and majesty that he be guilty of making mistakes.
This point is elucidated by Shaykh Ahmad Dahlawi in his book Hujjat al Baligah, he wrote:
“At all times and in every milieu, the primary message of the prophets was the correction of man’s belief in Allah, the correction of the bond between him and his master, the calling to sincere devotion to Allah alone, because he alone can harm or benefit, he alone is worthy of worship, supplication, refuge and sacrifice.
The main thrust of their campaign was directed against the idolatry prevalent in their time, manifested in the worship of idols and graven images, and the worship of pious and godly men (living or dead).” [1]
Although there are differences, in some instances significantly large differences, within the laws which each messenger was given to judge his people with, it should be realised that all divinely revealed laws are in agreement in terms of their core fundamentals.
The differences within these laws are due to the distinct peoples and instances to which they were revealed for. Ibn al-Qayyim notes that had the laws not come in this form, they would have been unbeneficial, impractical and even merciless. He further explains that it is impossible that they should come in any other form as Allah, the most merciful, the most wise, is the one who revealed them. He is perfect, and shall reveal them in a manner befitting his wisdom [2]:
“If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption…” [23:71]
Thus, all the Prophets, despite being from different mothers or different eras practiced one single religion as is confirmed by Allah, the most exalted:
“O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do. And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other).” [23: 51-52]
The same religion has he established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah - the which We have sent by inspiration to thee - and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: Namely, that ye should remain steadfast in religion, and make no divisions therein: to those who worship other things than Allah, hard is the (way) to which thou callest them. Allah chooses to himself those whom He pleases, and guides to himself those who turn (to Him). [42: 13]
All Messengers called towards the same teachings which presented man with a creedal foundation in which he should believe, for it is with these beliefs as well as their application that was man created with lofty goal:
“I have only created Jinns and men, that they may worship me.” [51:56]

[2] It should be noted however that unlike that which was found in previous messages. The message of Islam shall not be abrogated nor shall there be another divinely revealed law or book after the noble Qur’an as it is complete and perfect for all places and times:
If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good). [3:85]
“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…” [5:3]
