The Man

The Man Muhammad is human being

By Selma A. Cook

Come on dear little child

No need to cry to run and hide

Just come and sit right down with me

Cuddle up cozy on my knee

I want to tell a tale to you

Many know it - not just a few

It's a tale from long ago you see

But its message rings true for you and me

It is about the greatest man

Allah sent him - 'twas His plan

Sending His guidance and mercy to us

So we could live and die in trust

To the One who created all that's there

He knows everything and no one dares

Prophet Muhammad had all the necessary qualities for success in every aspect of life. But, more importantly, he was able to lead his community to success in every field. He is the source from which flowed all later developments related to command, statecraft, religion, spiritual development, and so on in the Muslim world.

In general, leaders should have the following qualities:

A real educator must have several virtues, among them the following:

First: To give due importance to all aspects of a person’s mind, spirit, and self, and to raise each to its proper perfection. The Qur’an mentions the evil-commanding self that drags people, like beasts with ropes around their necks, wherever it wants to go, and goads them to obey their bodily desires. In effect, the evil-commanding self wants people to ignore their God-given ability to elevate their feelings, thoughts, and spirits.

[But those will prosper who purify themselves, glorify the name of their Lord, and (lift their hearts) in Prayer. Nay (behold), you prefer the life of this world; but the Hereafter is better and more enduring. And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelations), the Books of Abraham and Moses.] (Al-A`la 87:14-19)

The issue of the Prophet's multiple marriages is one of the most debated and misunderstood questions regarding the Prophet's life. However, scholars maintain that the Prophet’s multiple marriages have their own wisdom and purpose ordained by Allah. In this he is no different than previous prophets such as Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Ya`qub (Jacob), Dawud (David), etc., who all had more than one wife.

Question: I heard somewhere that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has 99 names? Is this true? What are those names?

Answered by Sheikh `Alî A. al-Jumu`ah, professor at al-Imâm University, Qasîm Branch

Despite his position as a leader, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never behaved as if he was greater or better than other people. He never made people feel small, unwanted or embarrassed. He urged his followers to live kindly and humbly, releasing slaves whenever they could and giving in charity, especially to very poor people, orphans and prisoners, without any thought or reward.
